Elderberry Identification


A small shrubby tree, grows to around 5-12 feet high. Blooms in June and July with large flat-topped masses of 1/4 in. creamy white, star shaped blossoms. The blossom heads are followed by large drooping bunches of purplish-black berries. The central stems are smooth while the branching stems are covered with rough, gray bark. The leaves are compound, with 5-11 leaflets (usually 7), pointed at the tips, toothed, mostly smooth on top and slightly hairy and lighter underneath.
